Dealing with Energy Issues
The need for more renewable energy sources is greater than ever. Rising power prices, fears over security of supply and climate change have put the issue of energy high in everyone’s mind. National and regional authorities have acknowledged that renewable energy is an important solution to help meet the challenges of our modern lifestyle and its ever increasing energy demands. Scotland achieved its target of 100% of electricity sourced from renewables by 2020, but there is a huge amount still to do to meet the new Net-Zero targets.
What’s in it for the Community
Local Employment
- It is estimated that during construction, the proposals will contribute approximately £5 million to the Highland economy and generate 67 employment years for local workers.
- Construction contracts will be made available locally where possible.
- During the construction phase, internship programs will be made available to members of the local community.
Local Biodiversity
The scheme will include 14.5 ha of: restored blanket bog habitat and new riparian planting along the Allt Eireannaich watercourse.
Local Community Funding
- Community benefit is linked to the generating capacity of renewable energy assets. It is not normally provided with a BESS scheme because it simply stores the electricity generated by wind farms which have already provided community benefit payments. However, in this case, the applicant will provide a dedicated community contribution of £7,000 per annum. Over a 25-year period this would total £175,000.
Business Rates
- It is estimated that the proposal would contribute £500,000 per annum in non-domestic rates, about half of which would be directly useable by The Highland Council.
